According to the dictionary, printmaking is a noun and is defined as “the art or technique of making prints as practiced in engraving, etching, drypoint, woodcut or serigraphy.” But according to printmaker Lynne Hubner, printmaking is a verb.

“I see printmaking as the art of sharing and giving,” says Hubner, “Storytelling, nature, history, and pure beauty resound in my prints - a feeling of place, a merging of past with present combine in my thoughts and viewers have a glimpse into what I hold dear.”

Born in Central Valley, New York, Hubner has lived in Texas for the past twenty years.

“[Texas] peppers my view and challenges my east coast upbringing,” says Hubner, “It sets me free to express my vision.”

Hubner received her BFA in Drawing/English from the Manhattanville College Purchase in New York, and her MFA in Printmaking/Drawing from the University of North Texas in Denton, where she also instructed.

Today, between creating prints for regional, national, and international exhibits and exchanges, Hubner can be found teaching classes and workshops at her studio located at the Historic Art House of McKinney. Hubner’s studio is featured each year during McKinney’s Arts Studio Tour.

In addition to active involvement in McKinney’s art scene and organizations, she is an active member of numerous regional and national organizations, including the Baren Forum, the Southern Graphics Council, the Frank Reaugh Art Club, and the Austin Women Printmakers group, where she is a frequently invited workshop facilitator.

Currently, Hubner’s prints are featured in a solo show at the Goddard Art School in downtown Ardmore, Oklahoma, where she has examples of woodcuts, linocuts, and gelatin monotypes on display. The show runs through the month of February, and culminates on the 27th at 2:00 p.m. with Hubner leading a gallery discussion with examples of wood and linoleum plates.

Locally, Hubner’s work is often featured in galleries during Second Saturday Art Walks in McKinney’s historic downtown area. This Saturday, February 12th, her art will be on exhibit as a part of SJS Gallery’s Chinese New Year’s Celebration. The exhibit celebrates the Year of the Rabbit and opens with a 5:00pm-9:00pm reception.
During down time, Hubner enjoys impromptu travel, and spending time with husband Paul, and their children, Eric and Sarah. She can also be seen zipping around town on her Vespa scooter, which she fondly refers to as her red hot Italian.

At a recent gathering of McKinney’s Creative Community, Hubner shared that her word for 2011 is focus.

“Life is short. Embrace what has been given and celebrate.”
