Meet Chester Reception (Saturday): Chester, the delightful cat that has adopted Chestnut Square, has inspired L.C. Tobey and a team of four young people from the Arts and Music Guild to devote their time and talent to telling his story in word and image. Orisons Fine Art Gallery is pleased to introduce the first printing of the resulting children's book with a reception during February's Second Saturday in Downtown McKinney. Originals of the illustrations will be on display. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. 110 E. Louisiana. 7-10 p.m.
Krewe of Barkus (Sunday): Dress your four-legged friend as your favorite animated character and head to Historic Downtown McKinney for an afternoon of Mardi Gras fun at the Krewe of Barkus costumed dog (and family) parade. Historic Downtown McKinney calls in all dogs and dog lovers for a dog parade, costume contest, canine training, exercise demonstrations and much more. 12:30-4 p.m. based at Mitchell Park at the west entrance to the McKinney square.
Pieces of the Past (Thurs.-Sun.): The Collin County Historical Society & Museum (300 W. Virginia) hosts an exhibit now through March 23 where guests can see historically significant quilts of North Texas from the 1840s through the 1940s. (Exhibit open Thurs.-Sat., 11 a.m.-4 p.m.) In conjunction with this exhibit, this Saturday (2/9) is a special event from 1-3 p.m. when Ruth Fischbein Loyd, a child of Holocaust survivors, will share her journey of discovery as she researched her family history. She will display her family memory quilt made from images of family members who did not survive the war. Admission, $10; seniors, $7.50; members, free.
Little Shop of Horrors (Fri.-Sun.): A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant that is actually an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who is actually an alien creature poised for global domination! By McKinney Youth Theatre at Heard Craig Hall. Friday-Saturday, 7:15 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 2:15 p.m. $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Front row: $18. Purchase online or call 972-422-2575.
Daddy-Daughter Dance (Friday): At McKinney Community Center. Annual Daddy-Daughter dance for ages Pre-K to 3rd grade. Photographer on-site for additional fee. Call for reservations; this sells out quickly. 972-547-2690.
Second Saturday Bird Walk (Saturday): 8 a.m. monthly walk at the Heard Museum focuses on bird spotting & identification. Included in admission. Reservation required; call 972-562-5566.
Guitar in Altered Tunings (Saturday): This workshop introduces altered tunings for the guitar such as the Celtic tuning DADGAD. $30. At McKinney Guitar Studio, 109 1/2 E. The Redeemed Tour (Saturday): Featuring Big Daddy Weave, Chris August and Citizen Way; 6-8:30 p.m. at Christ Fellowship Church, 2801 Orchid. $20.
