Eli Hernandez: What Makes DFW a Special Place?

By Eli Hernandez, TSB Columnist

Over the holiday break, I had a lively discussion (read: debate) with a friend that lives in New York City.

I lived in NYC for many years, thus I had an advantage in our back-and-forth, while he has never visited DFW.

Our discussion centered on the pros and cons of working and living in NYC or DFW.

Without tainting your answers, some of the points made were rather obvious. For example, NYC has a more dynamic and lively theatre scene, while the standard of living is higher in DFW.

What do you think makes Dallas/Ft. Worth a special place to live?  Another way to ask this question is what sets DFW apart from say even Houston or San Antonio? What differentiates DFW from other major markets in the U.S.?

This is the third time I have lived in Dallas – yes, I am that old – I keep moving away, yet I keep coming back to this area. I believe it’s because this place is comforting to me – it feels like a small town, yet it is definitely a major metro area with big commerce and many business opportunities.

What is your perspective? Why do you choose to live here?

I think many come here because the cost of living is excellent compared to so many other parts of the country. It is also fairly convenient to get to other parts of the country from DFW - a central location.

Did you mean to say "while the standard of living is 'lower' in DFW?" Are you really meaning cost of living?

The standard of living in DFW is definitely "higher" than in NYC, because prices are not so high - thus the mighty dollar goes a bit further here. Ergo, a higher standard of living is correct.

A better way to say it would be "cost of living." The dollar does go much further here and our taxes are great...no income tax. NYC is a special place but only to visit. There's nothing like skating at Rockefeller Center at Christmastime, but more practically, there are way too many people and it's so dirty. I always felt like I needed to take another shower after 11am.
