TSB looks at this week's varsity football games in McKinney:
MCKINNEY HIGH (4-1) AT PLANO (3-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Plano’s John Clark Stadium
Lions Notes: MHS had its bye last week… The Lions last game was a week four loss at home versus Denton Ryan 35-28… This is McKinney’s first District 10-5A game… Running back Red Shannon is 14th in the 5A area in rushing with 554 yards on 69 carries. He also has five rushing scores… Quarterback Robert Somborn is second in touchdown passes in the area with 19, three behind Sachse’s Kent Myers. He is fourth in yards with 1,332… The Lions have three players in the top 40 in receiving yards, the only 5A school to have that many. Connor Fuentes leads the pack with 494 yards (T-8th), while T.V. Williams has 399 yards (17th) and Shannon has 376 yards (20th)… MHS has the second best offense in the 5A area, averaging 508 yards per game. Fellow District 10-5A member Plano East is first at 539.5 yards per game.
Plano Notes: Plano had its bye in week two… The Wildcats come into Friday’s game with a 3-2 record. Last Thursday, Plano lost on the road at Flower Mound Marcus 35-21… The Wildcats are 1-1 at home with a 14-7 win versus Lewisville in week zero and a 24-21 loss to Hebron in week four… Quarterback Richard Lagow is 19th in the 5A area with 939 passing yards. He has three touchdowns and five interceptions… Receiver Mitchell Hanson is 22nd in the area in receiving yards with 370. He has two touchdowns and averages 28.5 yards per reception… Plano’s defense allows just 22.2 points per game, tied with fellow District 10-5A member McKinney Boyd.
Matchup to Watch: With just five district games on the schedule this year, it is imperative that the Lions get off to a good start at Plano. There are no cupcakes in this district and talking to many scouts and experts, MHS has taken the “cupcake” label off of them with the way they have played in the first five games in 2012. This is a tough place to start your 5A district season at, but teams with explosive offenses like Hebron and Flower Mound Marcus have proven that matchups can be exploited down the field if you have the weapons to do so. Somborn and company need to put some crooked numbers on that scoreboard to take this district opener.
PLANO WEST (3-2) AT MCKINNEY BOYD (3-2)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
Broncos Notes: Boyd had its bye last week… The Broncos defeated Lewisville in their last game 42-14 on the road back in week four… Boyd is 1-1 at home this season after losing the season opener 38-20 versus Mesquite Horn and defeating Rockwall 44-7 back in week three… Running back Bryan Driskell is 48 yards behind South Garland’s Marquel McNac for the lead in rushing in the 5A area. McNac has 963 rushing yards while Driskell sits at 915. Both have 10 rushing touchdowns, tied for fourth in the area… Boyd is averaging 347 yards per game on offense, 35th in the 5A area… The Broncos are 13th in the area in team rushing per game with 249 YPG… They are tied for 14th in the area with Plano in scoring defense at 22.2 points per game.
Plano West Notes: Plano West had its bye last week… The Wolves defeated Flower Mound 47-7 at home in week four… Plano West is 0-1 on the road this season. In week one, Lake Highlands defeated West 34-19… Running back Sotonya Jamabo is 17th in the 5A area in rushing with 534 yards. He also has five rushing touchdowns… Quarterback Travis Korry is 27th in the area in passing with 644 yards. He is 43-of-73 passing with five touchdowns and two interceptions… The Wolves leading receiver Zac Gideo has 331 yards on 14 receptions with two touchdowns. Austin Copeland has 17 receptions for 277 yards and two scores…. Running back Auston Anderson leads the team in scoring with seven rushing touchdowns. He has also rushed for 360 yards on 53 carries… Plano West allows 27.2 points per game and scores 33.4 PPG, both in the top-40 in the 5A area.
Matchup to Watch: It is no secret that the Broncos ability to run the football plays a huge part in whether they win or lose a game. Plano West is pretty solid versus the run, allowing just 189.4 rushing yards per game, good for 28th in the 5A area. The last time these two teams played was back in 2009 when the Wolves defeated the Broncos 84-40 at Clark Field. Both teams are much different in every aspect, but Boyd needs to establish its run game early and have success with it to keep the Wolves offense off the field and avoid a game like the one in 09.
MCKINNEY NORTH (1-1, 1-4) AT LOVEJOY (2-0, 5-0)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Lovejoy H.S.
Bulldogs Notes: North won its first District 13-4A game of the season last week, defeating Royse City 35-21 at home… This will be the Bulldogs second road district game. They lost 45-21 at Sherman in week four… Quarterback Ben Dutze had his best rushing performance of the season last week versus Royse City, running for 64 yards and three touchdowns… In the absence of starting running back Trey Smith, Ronald Jones and Justin Jones ran for 40 and 128 yards respectively… There are two teams tied at 1-1 (North and Royse City), three teams tied at 2-0 (Lovejoy, Sherman, and Wylie East), and three teams tied at 0-2 (Denison, Greenville, and Wylie)… North is 1-2 at home this season… The Bulldogs are tied for 33rd in the 4A area in scoring offense, averaging 20.8 PPG. They have allowed 31.4 PPG, good for 40th in the 4A area.
Lovejoy Notes: The Leopards defeated Greenville 46-13 last week on the road to improve to 2-0 in District 13-4A… Lovejoy was projected as many as a playoff team in 2012… Running back Nicholaas LaSane is fourth in the 4A area in rushing with 627 yards. He has five rushing touchdowns and averages 10.1 yards per carry… Quarterback Bowman Sells is 15th in the area in passing with 815 yards. He has seven touchdowns and four interceptions… Lovejoy is fourth in the area in scoring offense at 43.8 PPG… The Leopards are 11th in the area in scoring defense at 17.6 PPG… They defeated Wylie 47-21 in their only district home game in week four.
Matchup to Watch: The Bulldogs were crippled with injuries following their road loss to Sherman in week four, none less important than running back Trey Smith. On Friday night, Dutze and company was able to have a lot of success on the ground in the win versus Royse City. If North continues to have success running the ball with Dutze, Justin Jones, and Ronald Jones, the Bulldogs have a chance in any game this season.
MCKINNEY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (2-3) AT ROCKWALL CHRISTIAN (0-4)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Rockwall Christian
Mustangs Notes: MCA defeated Waco Texas Christian 49-14 last week at home to improve to 2-3… This will be the final non-district game for the Mustangs… Running back Connor Doyle has rushed for 751 yards and now has 13 total touchdowns… MCA is 1-1 in road games this season, defeating Lutheran 51-0 in week two and losing to Fort Worth Temple Christian 28-23 in week four.
Rockwall Christian Notes: RCA lost to Frisco Legacy Christian last week 56-14… Running back Daniel Rorie is the team’s main offensive weapon, running for 423 yards and four touchdowns… RCA is averaging just 14.5 PPG while allowing 42.8 PPG.
