MCKINNEY HIGH (4-0) VS. DENTON RYAN (1-2)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
Lions Notes: MHS defeated North Garland 41-18 on Friday night to improve to 4-0 and win its third road game this season… Outgained the Raiders 452-297 in total yards. The Lions surrendered 204 rushing yards but only allowed 93 yards through the air… Quarterback Robert Somborn has had at least three passing touchdowns in each game this season. He currently leads the 5A area with 16 touchdowns to just two interceptions. Somborn is also third in the 5A area with 1,039 passing yards, with Sachse’s Kent Myers and Mesquite’s Alex Cooper throwing 1,287 and 1,219 respectively… Wide receiver Connor Fuentes caught season-high 219 yards on nine receptions versus North Garland, moving him into sixth in the 5A area with 400 receiving yards… Fellow receiver T.V. Williams is ninth in the area with 387 yards and an area high-tying seven touchdown receptions… The Lions are the fourth rated offense in the 5A area at 509.3 yards per game, while giving up 352.5 yards per game, good for 29th in the area.
Denton Ryan Notes: The Raiders reside in District 5-5A, along with Coppell, Flower Mound Marcus, Hebron, Flower Mound, and Lewisville… Denton Ryan was the projected district winner in many preseason predictions… The Raiders come in to the game with a record of 1-2 after losing in week two at home to Wylie East 34-31. They had a bye last Friday night… This is the first road game of the season for Denton Ryan… Quarterback Preston Compton has played in the past two games and has thrown for just 260 yards on 22-of-39 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions… Running back Tyron Williams has rushed for 303 yards on 41 carries, giving him an average of 7.39 yards per rush. Williams has three rushing touchdowns… Receivers Trent Willis and Xavier Gray are the Raiders top two targets, with Willis catching nine passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Gray grabbing 16 receptions for 165 yards and one score… This is the Raiders final non-district game.
Matchup to Watch: Many high school football experts around the area are already hyping this game up to be one of the best of the week, with the Lions and Raiders trying to finish their respective non-district schedules on a high note and go into district play with some momentum. Denton Ryan has allowed two 300-yard rushing games this season, so expect a big day from Jonathan Shannon, Xavious Taylor, and the rest of the backs as head coach Jeff Smith will hope his rushing attack can lead to a 5-0 record next Friday night.
MCKINNEY BOYD (2-2) AT LEWISVILLE (1-3)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Lewisville’s Goldsmith Stadium
Broncos Notes: Boyd won its homecoming game Friday night, defeating Rockwall 44-7… Running back Bryan Driskell broke several school marks in the game, including becoming the leading rusher in the history of the program, with 4,030 yards… After week three, Driskell is now second in the 5A area in rushing with 648 yards on just 69 carries, coming out to a 9.39 yards per attempt. He is also second in the area in scoring with 54 points, 22 points behind DeSoto’s Dontre Wilson… The Broncos are tied for 36th in the 5A area in offensive points per game with 25.3 PPG… Boyd is allowing 385.3 yards per game defensively, which is 38th best in the 5A area… Quarterback Curtis Ladd has thrown for 366 yards on 32-of-65 passing with three touchdowns and one interception.
Lewisville Notes: The Fighting Farmers were defeated by Arlington 41-13 on the road Friday night to drop their record to 1-3. Their only victory came in week two at home versus Irving by the score of 24-10… Lewisville is out of District 5-5A… The Fighting Farmers will rely heavily on the legs of running back Deandre Brown, who comes in to week four with 561 rushing yards, good for fourth in the 5A area. He also has four rushing touchdowns and leads the team in scoring with 24 points… Lewisville has two quarterbacks who have seen time on the field. Matt McDougal has 187 yards and two touchdowns while David Vasquez has 119 yards and one interception.
Matchup to Watch: The Broncos face another strong halfback with Brown and will need another strong defensive effort like they had versus Rockwall to finish out the non-district season with a winning record. Most importantly, if Driskell can continue to produce at the level that he is playing at right now, Boyd will be just fine heading into District 10-5A play.
MCKINNEY NORTH (0-3) AT SHERMAN (2-1)
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Sherman High School
Bulldogs Notes: North is coming off its bye week. The Bulldogs finished non-district play 0-3, with their combined played opponents record at 8-1… Running back Trey Smith is tied for 37th best in the 4A area with 246 rushing yards. He also has one rushing touchdown… Quarterback Ben Dutze is 21st best in the 4A area with 379 passing yards. He has thrown three touchdowns and six interceptions in three games… North is 40th in the area in scoring offense at 16.0 points per game, while giving up 31.3 points per game, good for 38th in the 4A area.
Sherman Notes: The Bearcats are coming off of their bye week… Sherman is 2-1 after losing to Highland Park 35-21 in week two. The Bearcats defeated Little Elm 57-56 in overtime in week zero and defeated Sulphur Springs 49-44 the following week, both games on the road… Versus Little Elm, quarterback Dru Smith threw for 403 yards and six touchdowns… Their biggest weapon on defense is linebacker Kahlee Woods, who has been on many top-25 colleges board for several months. Woods had 156 tackles a season ago… Sherman is projected as a playoff team from District 13-4A.
Matchup to Watch: Both teams are coming off of a bye week, so can the two weeks of preparation overcome any rust that may have formed from the extended time off? The Bulldogs may not like the record how it is now, but the brutal non-district schedule and how they battled against several quality opponents should help them out as district begins. Getting the first win of the real season is important, so a big road district win for North would help their road to a playoff berth in 2012.
MCKINNEY CHRISTIAN has a bye week.
