Although Friday night’s McKinney Boyd volleyball game was incredible to watch, it was also one of those games that gets your blood pressure a little higher then you'd like.
After defeating the Hebron Lady Hawks in the first two sets by narrow scores of 27-25 and 25-22, the Lady Broncos dropped the third set, 14-25. However, the girls bounced back and win the fourth set 25-17 to take the match 3-1.
"The third set was Hebron’s game," Boyd coach Kelly Quinn said, "and our passing kind of broke down because they were serving so aggressively."
During the match, Lady Bronco Kelly Koop led the team offensively with 13 kills. She also had nine digs while defensive leader of the game, Megan Mollett, racked up 17. Mollett also played great at the net, earning the team points with 11 kills. Adding to points earned, Krista Bukovac produced nine kills, while Libero Kaley Seaber tacked on an additional 11 digs to the match.
The teams were matched well, with almost every match being played point by point. Hebron would win a point with a great block but then the Lady Broncos would come back with a hit that made you jump up in awe.
For instance in the third match, even though they ended up losing the set, at the end the Lady Broncos got momentum with a block from Emma Meyer and Lauren Petrisin and a couple of kills from Koon. Koon also got two blocks and three kills within a seven-point span in order to end the fourth set. She also had a three-kill streak in the middle of the second.
"Kelly Koon wowed me tonight in this match with her spark of energy she provided the entire match," said Quinn. Obviously, her spark was a tremendous help in this win against Hebron.
The Lady Broncos will next travel to Coppell on Tuesday night, Sept. 18, in a rematch of last year’s state championship game. The match begins at 5:30 p.m.
