McKinney North lost its season-opening football game 21-17 to Carrollton Newman Smith on Thursday night at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.

After jumping out to a 17-0 halftime lead, the Bulldogs allowed 21 unanswered points to the Trojans. With the ball on the Newman Smith 45-yard line and less than 90 seconds left in the game, North was moving the ball down the field and looked to have an opportunity to win the game with a late touchdown.

However, quarterback Ben Dutze fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Trojans. Newman Smith was able to pick up one more first down and run out the clock for the season-opening victory at home. 

Dutze finished 16 of 29 passing for 199 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Trey Smith led the way on the ground with 98 yards on 23 carries. Receivers Gabe Constintine and Tre Sanders both caught a touchdown reception. 

Two areas that the Bulldogs must improve upon for next week is eliminating penalties and stopping the run. North was penalized seven times for 43 yards, while allowing the Trojans to run for 153 yards on 42 carries. 

McKinney North will play its home opener at Ron Poe Stadium next Friday night, Sept. 7, versus Prosper. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Tonight, Friday, Aug. 31, McKinney Boyd opens it season against Mesquite Horn at 7:30 p.m. at Ron Poe Stadium; McKinney High plays Mansfield Legacy on the road at 7:30 p.m. at R.L. Anderson Stadium. For previews of those games, click here if you missed our earlier posting of "Football This Week."
