Leadership McKinney, the Chamber’s nationally recognized leadership development program, announces the Class of 2013. Chosen through an application/selection process, 26 community members begin their adventure on Aug. 9 at the annual Alumni Reception and New Class Orientation at the Chamber office. The event is sponsored by The Body Shop Collision Repair.
These 26 class members will join the 458 alumni who have already completed the program. During the next 10 months, they will immerse themselves in McKinney as they have never done before and experience a challenging educational experience designed to equip them with leadership skills for the future.
The Chamber’s 25-year-old flagship program offers participants the tools to prepare themselves and their community for global competitiveness. Participants will discuss issues with community and regional leaders; they will learn about the inner workings of their community and how they can make an impact; they will evaluate their personality styles and how to work as a team; and they will build both professional and personal connections. After graduation, many will step forward to serve on one of the City’s boards or commissions; serve on a non-profit board; lead through volunteerism; or run for public office.
A critical piece of the program is the opportunity to work with nationally recognized futurist Carolyn Corbin, President of the Center for the 21st Century. Using Corbin’s book, Community Leadership 4.0: Impacting a World Gone Wiki, participants will find the stage set for group dialogue with Corbin and with community leaders. Discussion will focus on the values of leadership and importance of community while using 21st Century thinking and process. Living in one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, leaders must be equipped with skills and strategies to face challenges that our community will face. As Corbin states in her book, “the future is not a continuation of the present.”
As anthropologist Margaret Mead said: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
