"I've never been good at spare time," says singer Elizabeth Leonard as she looks to her husband with a smile. Jud Leonard smiles back at his wife as he cuts his eyes across the booth lining the back wall of McKinney's Square Burger to meet her gaze. They both burst out in a knowing laugh.
"Even if she were to have any spare time, she would fill it up. Quickly," says Jud, "She can't sit down for five minutes."
On Friday, September 7, Elizabeth Leonard, along with husband Jud and their band, will be in concert when Texas Pediatric Dentistry presents Concert For A Cure at the McKinney Performing Arts Center. With their fun, uplifting mix of classic and contemporary rock, as well as a set featuring country favorites, there will definately be something for everyone to enjoy. Many will remember Elizabeth as a crowd favorite and finalist in last year's McKinney Music Mash-up presented by TownSquareBuzz.com. Ticket sales for this upcoming event will benefit the charity closest to Elizabeth's heart, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
In addition to fundraising for LLS and sharing both a life and the stage with Jud, Elizabeth fills her time parenting five (yes, five) young children, all under the age of 11. Meanwhile, with multiple music degrees lining her wall, she recently returned to school to add nursing to her already impressive professional skill set. Also, with Jud and her band, she serves as a church musician providing music for her house of worship's contemporary service. And, as if that isn't enough to fill in the time slots, in that aforementioned spare time, on behalf of the LLS, Elizabeth trains daily in preparation to run her 2nd marathon.
Elizabeth is quick to credit her wonderful husband as the reason she is able to manage her time as well as she does. "I have a really good husband," she says, "Plus, I run early in the morning usually before everyone gets up."
In addition to her early morning runs five days a week, Elizabeth does a long Saturday team run, and fits in cross-training as her schedule allows.
Elizabeth's involvement with marathon running and LLS began in the spring of 2011 when she received a pamphlet in the mail encouraging people to train for an endurance event while raising money for blood cancer patients and research.
"I couldn't bring myself to throw it away," says Elizabeth who held onto the pamphlet for another month, "Every time I looked at it I was reminded of my high school friend whose daughter, the same age as my oldest daughter, had suffered through the diagnosis and treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. My brother-in-law had recently lost his 17 year old brother to leukemia, and a friend of my mother's had recetly lost her 3-year-old daughter to the same awful disease. Before long, I picked up the phone and called my sister and asked her if she wanted to run a marathon with me."
Elizabeth ran her first marathon last fall, and will return to San Francisco this year to run in the Nike Women's Marathon benefitting LLS. Through particpation in this feat of endurance and through her ability to entertain with her incredibly rich and powerful voice, Elizabeth intends to do her part to raise awareness and funds for LLS.
