When Glen Oaks 4th grader Daniel Collins was assigned Congressman Sam Johnson for his "Famous Texans" project, actually meeting the Congressman, especially in his Washington D.C. office, was not part of the plan. The project simply required Daniel to make a scrapbook about the Congressman and to deliver an oral report as Sam Johnson.
Meanwhile, Daniel's parents were communicating with his Congressman Johnson's office regarding tours for their summer trip and during e-mails correspondence, the Congressman became aware that Daniel was doing a project about him. The Collins family was invited to the Congressman's office on Capital Hill for a meet and greet and they did just that during a recent trip to Washington D.C.
Daniel's mom, Jacquie, said, "The meeting was special because Daniel had spent a significant amount of time learning about the Congressman's life and why he is important to Texas and then he got to share his project with him in person.
The Congressman was very gracious. He looked through the scrapbook and gave Daniel a special coin, and then autographed the project."
