“Let’s run that scene again!” says director Collin Wells. Thirty young actors and actresses between the ages of 8 and 18 race around the stage back to their designated starting points.
McKinney Repertory Theatre’s Broadway Bound program unites kids from all over McKinney and surrounding areas for an intense two-week theatre camp. Gathering at McKinney Performing Arts Center, these kids work diligently to put on the summer’s musical to see.
And that requires intense practices.
As a previous participant in these camps, I can attest to the fact that it is a challenge to put up a show in two weeks, but these young dreamers are willing to dedicate day after day of 10-to-5 rehearsals to put on a musical they can be proud of.
This year’s goal? Disney’s Aladdin Jr. The kids walk in script in hand ready to rehearse.
“It is a challenge to put up a full show in two weeks,” says director Collin Wells. “But these kids come in ready to work and ready to rise to the challenge.”
They begin with dance rehearsals running the same scene over and over until they have perfected it. With a quick break under their belts, they head off to vocal coaching and running scenes again. Not only are the performers working hard, but the show’s technical crew, led by their fearless leader Lisa Martin, also puts in 7 hour work days to make sure details such as costumes, sets, lights, and sound all reflect the professionalism of the organization.
“It can be stressful trying to pull everything together in such a short amount of time. But it definitely teaches you something new about theatre,” says costume mistress Emmie Roy.
Success in the past has proven these kids have what it takes to step up to the plate and put on a performance that can gather in the community for a time of enjoyment and singing along to the classics.
“I love doing these camps,” says camper Joseph Campbell. “It’s a lot of fun knowing we can put on a great show in only two weeks. I also make a lot of friends doing these shows as well. They are great fun.”
