The City of McKinney will join in the national freedom celebration as the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host a historical celebration of independence on Saturday, June 16 at Old Settler’s Park, 1201 E. Louisiana. The event, which runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will feature a cookout, live entertainment by AM Jazz and a children’s area with games and activities.
Juneteenth has been a recognized Texas State Holiday since 1980. The holiday observes the emancipation of African-American slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, marking the day when the last of the slaves in America were freed. This distinctive public holiday originates from Texas but is declared and recognized worldwide.
