Second Saturday in McKinney is always hot, but this particular 2nd Saturday brings the heat. From early morning bike races to Garden Tours and Ice Cream Crank-offs, not to mention, Art Exhibits to Boot Scootin', there is more than enough fun to be had in McKinney. Let's get to it shall we?
First, let's talk about how you should end your 2nd Saturday- by heading over to Hank's Texas Grill to check out this guy and his band. I recently had the pleasure of catching up with singer/songwriter Bart Crow and according to him, McKinney needs to get ready for a rockin' good time.
"I love playing Hank's," says Crow, "It's one of our favorite stops. David and his crew are the best."
Crow's music career began when he taught himself to play guitar and write songs while serving in the Army. Later while attending Tarleton University, he booked his first show.
"In the beginning, it was just me and my guitar," says Crow.
After graduation, Crow's focus on music ramped up to full-time gig status when he moved to Austin, and took on a full band. Much to the delight of fans everywhere he hasn't looked back.
The influence of music greats Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt and Paul Simon can be heard in the progressive country sounds of the Bart Crow Band, and in Crow's newest single "Little Bit Of Luck" released this week.
"It's my first attempt at being light hearted," says Crow who speaks candidly of his struggle to balance being creative and hitting the entertainment target at the same time, "Some folks come out to be moved by the words of a song while others are there to forget and just have a good time. When you find that right balance for everyone, that's a good feeling."
Be sure to check out the video below to get a sneak peek at the making of the record. Fun stuff.
And, be sure to check The Bart Crow Band out live when they take the stage at Hanks Saturday, June 9 at 10 p.m. Click here to grab your tickets now.
This weekend also brings us the 21st Collin Classic Bicycling Event, touted as the best bike rally in North Texas. The Classic is a rural bike rally that starts and finishes at McKinney North High School. It begins at 8:00 a.m. and offers routes from a 4 mile family-friendly loop to a 62 mile jog and everything in between. Longer routes will wind through McKinney's Historic District and even into the wilds of northeastern portions of Collin County. The rally ends with a Peddlers' Party at the finish line (read air-conditioned cafeteria at the school).
The McKinney Garden and Home Tour 2012 presents "Garden Treasures". Kicking off this much anticipated annual event will be An Evening Garden Party set for June 8 from 7-9 p.m. at 4403 Shadywood, with the official Home and Garden tour happening on Saturday June 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grab your tickets by clicking here.
This weekend marks the 17th year of yumminess when Chestnut Square hosts the 17th Annual Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank-Off. This year's competition offers categories for families, individuals and even kids. Cranking starts at 9 a.m. and sampling starts at noon. $20 buys you 12 samples at the event. The winner will be announced at 1:45 p.m. Fest ivies will include old fashioned carnival fun, a magic show, music and $2 scoops of Henry's Homemade Ice Cream from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It wouldn't be a 2nd Saturday in Downtown McKinney without a visit to Laura Moore Fine Art Studios. This month, we are in for a special treat as she presents her latest series of watercolor paintings in "Habitant de Paris." Moore has recently been awarded an Artists in Residence in Paris, France, at the American Church in Paris. While there, she will create a large scale oil painting in continuation of her labyrinth series. The painting will be displayed for one year in the sanctuary of the American Church in Paris.
The "Habitant de Paris" opening debut begins at 7 p.m. and goes till 10 p.m. You'll want to join Moore as she prepares for her journey by revisiting fond memories of Parisian trips past through her most recent work.
