Softball Playoffs: MHS Wins Two On Saturday To Advance To Area Round

By Mike Bruu, TSB Sports Writer

After a frustrating night on the diamond Friday, McKinney High needed to win two games in a row on Saturday to advance to the area round of the UIL state softball tournament. After winning game two 2-1 over Carrollton Creekview to even up the best-of-three series, the Lionettes won the decisive game three by a score of 6-2, meaning that their season would last for another week.

Despite the three errors committed in the field, MHS was able to put up enough offense to come out with the huge game three win over Creekview. Chelsea Thomas was the winning pitcher for MHS, and she also tripled in the ballgame at the plate. Courtney Derrick also doubled for the Lionettes. This was Thomas’ second win on the mound on Saturday, showing just how important she is to the success of the Lionettes.

In game two MHS was outhit 6-4 by Creekview, but the Lionettes were able to make them count on the way to the 2-1 victory. Derrick hit the lone triple in the game for MHS at the dish.

The Lionettes will face Dallas Hillcrest in a best-of-three series at Plano East starting with Game one on Wednesday night. Game two will be Thursday and if necessary, Game three will be Friday. All times are at 7 p.m.
