Frisco Wakeland proved why it's the second-ranked team in Class 4A softball. The Wolverines (28-6) easily dispatched of McKinney North (13-13-1) on Saturday, 17-1, to complete a two-game sweep of the Bulldogs in a bi-district playoff series.
Winning pitcher Hannah Newcomb scattered four hits and hit a two-run homer to pace Wakeland, which advanced to the area round and will meet Woodrow Wilson, a 6-5 winner over North Dallas in a one-game playoff on Friday.
The Wolverines chased North starter Celeste Vertolivo early in the third inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Lauren Reinhardt and sophomore Mary Valdez finished out the pitching for the Bulldogs.
Wakeland's offense totaled 16 hits in the five-inning game. Leadoff hitter Brittany Gehle led the way with three hits and four RBI. Allie Lindsey, shaking off a rough collision in Friday's 11-1 Game 1 loss at Frisco Heritage, led North with two hits and an RBI.
