With the baseball and softball regular season winding down, many of you have been asking about where all three high schools currently sit in the quest to make the postseason. In fact, all three softball programs have already clinched a berth to the playoffs, while two of the three baseball programs have a chance to play ball into May. So without further ado, let’s set up the scenarios in what could be a very wacky week on the diamond.
McKinney Boyd locked up its first district championship in school history last Tuesday night, and the Lady Broncos will try and finish the District 10-5A campaign a perfect 14-0 when they travel to North Garland tonight.
McKinney High currently sits at 9-4 in District 10-4A with one game remaining in the regular season. The Lionettes travel to 3-10 Highland Park this evening, and with the road win would secure the No. 3 seed in the district and give their crosstown rival, McKinney North, the fourth seed. MHS defeated the Lady Scots 7-0 at home on March 27th.
McKinney North held the No. 3 three spot in the standings for the majority of district play, but the Lady Bulldogs are in danger of finishing in fourth place if they cannot defeat 11-2 Wylie at home this evening, or MHS defeats Highland Park on the road. North is currently 9-4 in district play and are tied with MHS for third in the standings, but the Lionettes hold the head-to-head advantage because of the two game sweep over the Lady Bulldogs this season. If North has any chance to avoid playing a number one seed in the bi-district round of playoffs, the Lady Bulldogs are going to have to knock off one of the best teams in the district once again. Back on March 27th North defeated Wylie 11-8 on the road, so we could be in for another slugfest on the diamond in tonight’s season finale.
McKinney Boyd baseball is trying to follow in the softball program's footsteps by clinching its first district championship in school history. With two games remaining, the Broncos sit at 10-2 in District 10-5A and are tied for first with Rowlett. But instead of having to do a little scoreboard watching, the unofficial district championship game will be played tonight, April 20, at Bronco Field between Rowlett and Boyd. In the first meeting of the season, Rowlett defeated the Broncos 2-1 in what was a game with several key errors made by both teams. If Boyd can knock off Rowlett at home on Senior Night, the Broncos would be one full game above Rowlett, and no matter what happens with 9-3 Sachse on Friday night versus 2-10 South Garland, would hold the tiebreaker over Sachse because of the two game sweep this season.
McKinney North finds itself in a fierce battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 10-4A with Wylie East and Wylie. Both North and Wylie East come into Friday’s action at 6-6 with Wylie High School hovering in sixth place at 5-7. During the two meetings this season the Bulldogs and Wylie East split the series with both teams winning on their home field. But with only two games remaining in the regular season, the Bulldogs will have to do some serious work on the road as they travel to 8-4 Rockwall this evening and finish at Wylie next Friday. For Wylie East it also finished with two road games, with a trip to 3-9 McKinney High School tonight then a tough test at district leader 10-2 Rockwall-Heath. Lastly, Wylie needs two home wins against last place Richardson Pearce and North and at least one loss by both North and Wylie East in order to force a three-way tie for the final playoff spot. Safe to say that the next week in District 10-4A baseball will be something to keep your eye on.
McKinney High will try and finish the season out on a high note with two home games against Wylie East and Highland Park. Fresh off of a two-game winning streak, the 3-9 Lions will look to gain some momentum heading into the offseason after a year in which they just couldn’t ever get it going on the diamond.
