McKinney High's Chelsea Thomas dominated McKinney North in almost every way possible in the final Crosstown Showdown on Tuesday at North. Thomas struck out 15 and no-hit the Bulldogs, as well as belting a grand slam in the Lionettes' 5-0 softball upset of the Bulldogs.
Not only did Thomas riddle the McKinney North offense, her performance was a significant blow to any hopes the Bulldogs had for sharing a lead in District 10-4A. Thanks to Thomas, McKinney (15-13, 7-4) was able to erase any memory of Friday's horrific 12-error performance in an 8-2 home loss to Rockwall. The Bulldogs dropped to 12-9-1 overall and 8-3 in district play.
North starter Celeste Verdolivo struggled with her control at times and walked three. Two of those walks came in the critical third inning, when Courtney Gilstrap walked with one out to load the bases. One out later, Thomas hammered Verdolivo's first offering off the scoreboard in left center field.
Thomas added another hit and Alyssa Fontillas had a pair of singles for McKinney. Thomas' changeup proved to be her most effective weapon. She got 13 of 15 strikeouts swinging and struck out the side in the first, third, and fifth innings.
