McKinney ISD Teachers of the Year were announced Thursday night from among the school system's 31 campuses. Its annual banquet was held at El Dorado Country Club, and attendees included Mayor Brian Loughmiller, several City Council members, school administrators and their peers.
At the end of the evening, the District winners were announced. David Bill, a 1st Grade Teacher at Finch Elementary School was named the 2012-13 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Melody Nicholson, a 12th Grade Economics teacher at McKinney High School was named the 2012-13 Secondary Teacher of the Year.
In his remarks, Mr. Bill thanked the administrative staff at Finch ES, his wife and his parents, who flew in from Chicago for the occasion. He has been teaching for 10 years and in the evening’s program the following expressed his outlook:
‘I am transforming my students’ futures by providing them opportunities that are not available to them outside of school," Bill said. "My classroom wiki is full of creative, engaging lessons that are student-centered. My students and I are 21st century learners.’
Melody Nicholson has been teaching Economics at McKinney High School for five years. Upon the announcement she gave credit to district administration, MHS administration, and most importantly her students. She also thanked her husband who had "raced" to the banquet from a track meet. From the program:
‘All students have the capacity to learn regardless of race, ethnicity, socio-economic and/or religious background," Nicholson said. "No matter what type of environment the students come from, each child has the ability to learn and grow. Students are not characterized as ‘unteachable’, ‘unreachable’ or ‘disinterested’ (my preferred challenge) in my classroom.
“When I cross the threshold of my classroom, I am at home."
