Rockwall Edges Lady Dogs in Softball

Kayla Vandegriff’s three-hit pitching and a couple of timely extra-base hits paced Rockwall past McKinney North, 3-1, in a battle for second place in District 10-4A on Friday at North.

Vandegriff struck out only three Bulldogs, but she did not allow a walk and kept the North offense off balance most of the night. The Lady Yellow Jackets (8-9, 5-1) scored two of their runs on triples and collected nine hits off Bulldog pitcher Celeste Verdolivo.

A bloop triple beyond first base led to Rockwall’s first run in the first inning. Carlie Jenkins led off the game with a sharp single to left and scored with two outs when Kennedy Harrison’s fly ball dropped just in front of a diving Chandler Johnson in shallow right.

The Bulldogs (8-8-1, 4-2) responded in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Ashleigh Ahlborn singled and advanced to second on Raven Gutierrez’s sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved Ahlborn to third and Johnson brought her home on a single between first and second.

But after that North never threatened. Vandegriff set the Bulldogs down in order the rest of the way, retiring 16 in a row. Taylor McAllister’s single up the middle in the first was the only other hit for North.
