McKinney pools have experienced a record number of visitors this summer trying to keep cool in the scorching heat. To help residents deal with an extended heat wave, the hours of operation have been extended at the Old Settler’s Aquatic Center, 1101 E. Louisiana.
The Old Settler’s Aquatic Center will be open on the weekdays from Aug. 22-26 and from Aug. 29-Sept 2 between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Normally, weekday operations stop on the Friday before the McKinney Independent School District (MISD) starts the school year, and pools continue to operate during the weekends until Labor Day. No additional funds will be needed to cover the extended hours of service.
The pool at Old Settler’s will be open for regular hours during the weekend. The Juanita Maxfield Aquatic Center ended weekday operations on Friday, Aug. 19, but it will remain open during regular hours on weekends until Labor Day.
“This summer we have seen a 17 percent increase in attendance at the city’s aquatic facilities as compared to last summer. We expect close to 30,000 visitors this summer total. Due to regular operational efficiencies, we are able to extend the hours at the Old Settler’s Aquatic Center and stay within our current budget, which helps ease the heat of this summer for our residents and visitors,” said Parks, Recreation and Open Space Director Lemuel Randolph.
