On Monday, August 15th, McKinney Boyd High School graduates, David Jasinski and David Greer, and McKinney High School graduate Preston Hornbeck received a knock at the door. Upon answering, each young man was greeted by representatives of the Collin County Baseball Umpire Association, and Mrs. Norita Gunter of McKinney, who presented each graduate with the Lindsey Gunter Memorial Scholarship.
The Lindsey Gunter Memorial Scholarship is funded by donations made by individual umpires in memory of Lindsey Gunter, who founded the Collin County chapter in 1976. Gunter served as President of the chapter, until his passing in May of 2003. Athletic ability on the field has no impact on receiving this scholarship, as recipients are awarded based on their involvement with their high school baseball team, and their exhibition of the qualities of hard work, good character, sportsmanship, teamwork, and service, giving back to the community.
2010 recipients of the Lindsey Gunter Memorial Scholarship were Michael Strebeck, of Community, Ethan Clay, of Wylie, and Jess Dixon, of McKinney.
To date, the CCBUA has awarded $2500.00 each year to deserving graduates.
