MHS 7-On-7: Minute To Win It

FRISCO - In each of its Thursday morning games, the McKinney High 7-on-7 team trailed with a minute remaining on the clock and the ball in the hands of soon-to-be junior Robert Somborn. And in both cases, the Lions came through in the clutch and scored a touchdown in the closing seconds to earn wins over Frisco Wakeland and Frisco Centennial.

"We were beat. We came back, managed the game, and won two games," 7-on-7 coach Rick Tankersley told his players. "I'm proud of you."

In game one, Frisco Wakeland trailed for most of the 20-minute session until the Wolverines' quarterback found a wide-open receiver cutting across the field for an easy go-ahead touchdown. The Lions then took over and Somborn completed a 10-yard pass to start the drive. With time running out, the Lions decided to go for it all and it was receiver Johnny Geter who came up big with a touchdown catch over a Wakeland defender to seal the win.

After a short break, the Lions took the field again to square off against Frisco Centennial. MHS seemed to have a comfortable 20-8 lead with nine minutes remaining but the Titans found their way back into the game and managed to take the lead with about 1:30 left to play. Just like in game one, Somborn found his receiver on the left side of the field and delivered a perfectly placed ball to sophomore T.V. Williams, who caught the game winner in stride.

McKinney High will take next week off but the Lions will return to 7-on-7 action the following week. Here are the highlights from Thursday's games...
