PRINCETON, TX - After beating rival McKinney North in two, 20-minute games Tuesday night in Princeton, the MHS freshman 7-on-7 football team completed a perfect 8-0 mark for the summer season. In the first game of the night, the Lions rolled to a 30-7 victory. The Bulldogs came out much more aggressive in the second game, forcing an early interception and keeping the game close for most of regulation. But in the end, MHS was able to pull away with a 29-16 win to end the 7-on-7 season unbeaten.
During the month of June, the Lions have dominated such competition as the Class 3A Princeton Panthers and 5A crosstown rivals McKinney Boyd.
Last week, the Lions took home two wins against the Broncos. The first was a close 18-15 contest and the second was a 34-0 blowout. Despite Boyd's impressive 53-player freshman roster, the Lions kept their undefeated streak alive with a 14-player team.
"This incoming class has got a lot of talent," 7-on-7 coach Brian Sutter Sr. said. "But at the end of the day, we're coming from three different middle schools so this is about letting these kids get to know each other, build team chemistry, and have a good time."
MHS head football coach Jeff Smith gave the freshman 7-on-7 coaches the same plays the Lions run on the varsity level so that the boys will be better prepared come training camp in August.
"It's about learning the plays and learning the new high school terminology so they have a little bit of a jump start when they get to high school."
Here are the highlights from Tuesday night's games…
